How to convert a PDF to Word for free, with no sign-up

To convert a PDF to Word for free, open the PDF to Word converter in your browser, pick your file, start the conversion and grab the .docx file once it's done. You don't need an account or any software, and your file stays on your device in Browser mode.

Most guides skip the one detail that decides whether the final document looks good: the type of PDF you're starting with. Most errors happen because people use the wrong method for their file.

Find out what kind of PDF you have

PDFs made from Word files, websites or other apps contain actual text. Scans and photos of pages are just images of words, and converters treat the two very differently.

Try opening your PDF and selecting a sentence with your mouse or finger. If you can highlight individual words, you have a digital PDF, and Browser mode is the way to go. If the entire page highlights as one big block, or nothing happens at all, it's a scan. You'll need OCR for that, since the text has to be read from an image.

How to convert PDF to Word, step by step

  1. Open PDF to Word and select your PDF.
  2. Choose "In your browser" for a digital PDF, or "Advanced AI" for scans and complex tables.
  3. Start the conversion.
  4. Download the .docx file and open it in Word.

Browser mode or Advanced AI mode?

Browser mode reads the text layer in your PDF and rebuilds it as a Word document right on your machine. It handles text, layout and simple tables. There are no limits on file size or how often you use it, and you don't have to sign up for anything. Since scanned pages don't have a text layer, Browser mode won't find anything to read there.

If you have scanned pages, complex tables or forms, use Advanced AI mode. It reads page images with an AI vision model on our private GPU server. You need a free account with 150 credits a month, and each page costs 1 credit. It takes files up to 50 MB and 100 pages. Your file is uploaded to our own server for processing and deleted automatically afterwards. It is never shared with third parties.

Why the Word file comes out wrong

If the text looks garbled or is missing entirely, a scan probably went through a converter that only reads text layers. Switch to Advanced AI mode instead.

Tables and pages with multiple columns can shift around because Word arranges content differently than a PDF does. You will likely need to do some manual cleanup on those parts. Simple documents usually convert closely.

What file do you get?

The result is an actual .docx file. You can open it in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and edit it like normal.

Check the result before you send it

Always compare your Word file with the PDF before you send it out. Look at the tables, names and numbers first, since those details matter most and a conversion can change them. Hold onto your original PDF until you are sure everything looks right.

You might not need Word at all

If you're just fixing a couple of typos, the PDF editor lets you change the text right inside the file, and it stays a PDF. If you just want the raw text, PDF to Text is your fastest bet. To go the other way, use Word to PDF.
